Promoting High-Quality Foreign Trade Development
The Canton Fair’s “Trade Bridge” initiative has once again proven its pivotal role in boosting global trade. From December 19 to 20, 2024, the fair successfully hosted a sourcing trip to Dongguan’s Dalang and Songshan Lake Foreign Trade Transformation and Upgrading Base, where 24 top multinational purchasing enterprises connected with over 70 local manufacturing companies. This event resulted in a significant USD 62 million in intended purchase orders, reflecting the immense business potential of these dynamic regions.
Jointly organised by the Department of Commerce of Guangdong Province and the Bureau of Commerce of Dongguan City, the event attracted key players from around the world, including leading companies from the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, India, and the United Arab Emirates.
Dongguan: A Global Manufacturing Powerhouse
Dongguan’s well-established industrial base makes it an integral part of the global supply chain, particularly in sectors like electronics, textiles, and household goods. The city’s position as a major manufacturing powerhouse is underpinned by its advanced production facilities, efficient logistics systems, and strong supply chains. Dalang, famously known as the “Wool Capital of the World,” and Songshan Lake, a leading high-tech zone focused on electronic information and the digital economy, were key locations visited by international buyers.
Dalang is home to an impressive concentration of wool textile manufacturing, while Songshan Lake is emerging as a hub for cutting-edge industries, including electronics, new energy, and digital technologies. The sourcing trip provided a deep dive into these thriving industrial ecosystems, highlighting the strength of Dongguan’s economic development and the quality of products offered by local manufacturers.
Expanding the “Trade Bridge” Network
The Canton Fair’s “Trade Bridge” program is one of the most anticipated events of the year, facilitating face-to-face meetings between international buyers and Chinese suppliers. The 2024 edition was no exception, as it provided buyers with a unique opportunity to explore Dongguan’s rich manufacturing landscape, interact directly with manufacturers, and assess their capabilities. This event featured factory tours, promotional sessions, and on-site negotiations that allowed participants to discover the diverse product offerings from Dongguan’s manufacturers.
A key highlight of the sourcing trip was the product exhibition zone, which showcased household appliances, fashion accessories, bags, and suitcases. Over 300 product samples were presented by local suppliers, providing a comprehensive look at the breadth and depth of Dongguan’s manufacturing capabilities. Buyers were able to gain first-hand insights into the latest trends, innovations, and production techniques shaping the global marketplace.
Supporting Local Economic Development
The sourcing trip also played a crucial role in promoting the development of the local economy in Dongguan. By connecting international buyers with local manufacturers, the Canton Fair has been able to strengthen the global competitiveness of Dongguan’s industrial sectors. In addition, the sourcing trip provided valuable opportunities for local businesses to expand their market reach and establish new partnerships with international buyers, fostering long-term trade relationships that will continue to drive economic growth.
The Growing Impact of the Canton Fair
In 2024, the Canton Fair organised over 700 “Trade Bridge” events, offering businesses from around the world a platform to showcase their products and services. These events facilitate not only trade but also cultural exchanges, fostering a deeper understanding of global business practices. By providing an opportunity for face-to-face communication between buyers and suppliers, the Canton Fair continues to play a vital role in expanding international trade networks and promoting cross-border cooperation.
“The Canton Fair remains one of China’s most important platforms for foreign trade, offering an unparalleled opportunity for companies to connect with international buyers and explore new markets,” said Zhang Sihong, Deputy Secretary-General of the Canton Fair and Deputy Director of the China Foreign Trade Centre. “In 2025, we will continue to focus on demand-oriented trade events and strengthen our role as a bridge for international business and economic development.”
