Manchester-based EV charging company, Charge-M8, has announced the global launch of Libra, a unique dynamic load balancing device aimed at the electric vehicle charging industry. Libra, which will be available from September, enables various brands of EV chargers to be load balanced via Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) platforms.
Ian Hughes, Technical Director at Charge-M8, explained: “We made a deliberate choice not to use directly connected load balancing for our commercial EV chargers, due to concerns over long-distance accuracy and reliability. Based on our experience as installers, the incoming power supply can be far from the EV chargers, particularly in commercial projects, rendering directly connected CT clamps impractical.”
He added that developing a stand-alone device that is hardware-agnostic and compatible with OCPP platforms for both new and retrofit installations was the natural solution.
“One of our primary goals was to make installation as easy as possible for installers,” Hughes said. “The Libra device includes 4G GSM communication as standard, with Ethernet and Wi-Fi as backup options, making it incredibly simple to install.”
Hughes continued: “When we consulted with OCPP platform partners and installers, they asked the following questions:
· Q: Can voltage readings and current direction be monitored to account for both import and export?
A: Yes, we included this feature in our development process.
· Q: Is there a limit to the number of CT clamps the Libra device supports?
A: CT clamps rated up to 120A come as standard, with 400A options available on request. For larger supplies, optional Rogowski coils with a diameter of 110mmØ are suitable for systems of 1kVA and above.
· Q: How straightforward is commissioning?
A: We’ve incorporated the same 4.3” touchscreen found in Charge-M8’s commercial EV chargers, making commissioning simple and intuitive, without the need for apps or Wi-Fi hotspots.”
Julian Smith, CEO of Charge-M8, commented: “The introduction of the Libra DLB Device is an important step forward for us, as we evolve into a key manufacturer of commercial EV charging products. Our goal is to provide top-tier commissioning and technical support to installers globally.
“Following comprehensive prototype testing in the UK, Europe, the UAE, the US, and Canada since November 2023, the Libra device is now set for release. It integrates seamlessly with over 40 OCPP platforms, and the ease of installation will appeal to EV installers around the world.”
Charge-M8 is fast establishing itself as a leading name in workplace EV charging solutions. The company is approved by OZEV for both domestic and commercial installations, and it offers technical support from fully qualified installers. Recently, it was awarded accreditation under the UK Trading Standards’ Buy with Confidence scheme, reflecting its commitment to high standards of customer service and business integrity.
With so many options in the EV charging and load balancing market, it’s always worth consulting with an expert rather than a generic call centre.
