In a groundbreaking achievement for the agriculture sector, Cronus Chemicals LLC has announced that it has obtained the Construction and Air Permit from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its ammonia production facility in Tuscola, Illinois. This significant milestone is a crucial step for Project Cronus, strategically located in the heart of the US corn belt.
Impact on Food Supply Chains
The cutting-edge facility is set to play a vital role in both domestic and global food supply chains. Utilizing proprietary technology from UHDE – Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions, the plant is projected to produce 950,000 short tons of ammonia annually. Its prime location, adjacent to three interstate gas pipelines, guarantees access to abundant natural gas resources, enhancing both pricing competitiveness and operational efficiency.
Commitment to Local Production
Erzin Atac, CEO of Cronus Chemicals, expressed enthusiasm over the permit’s approval, stating, “We are delighted to achieve this critical milestone in our project, reinforcing our commitment to delivering reliable, locally produced ammonia. Our new plant, situated in the most significant consumption region in the country, will help alleviate supply shortages faced by local farmers and industrial users.”
Economic Opportunities and Job Creation
Melih Keyman, Chairman and majority shareholder of Cronus, noted, “Launching a major project like Cronus Chemicals in the US represents a tremendous opportunity for our family and Keytrade AG. We are proud to contribute to job creation in the great State of Illinois.”
The demand for ammonia is on the rise, outpacing current supply in the US, with Illinois being the largest consumer of agricultural ammonia. Project Cronus is strategically positioned to address this escalating demand with its substantial annual production capacity, making it a pivotal player in both national and global fertilizer markets.
Supporting Sustainable Agriculture
Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “With its strategic location and state-of-the-art technology, Cronus Chemicals will bolster local farmers by producing ammonia, a more sustainable fertilizer option. This project not only strengthens the agricultural sector in Central Illinois but also paves the way for further innovations in sustainable fertilizers, which is essential for Illinois’ greener future.”
Union Support and Skilled Labor
Josh McElravy, President of the Lincoln Land Building Trades Union, expressed excitement about Cronus Chemicals reaching this pivotal stage. He said, “Through the Project Labor Agreement signed between North America Building Trades Unions and Cronus Chemicals, we are committed to providing the skilled labor force necessary to turn this important project into reality.”
Economic and Environmental Benefits
Cronus Chemicals’ initiative is notable not just for its production capacity, but also for its economic and environmental considerations. The project is expected to deliver attractive returns by capitalizing on the high price premiums in the corn belt. Unlike long lead-time deliveries from distant suppliers, Cronus will provide safer, faster, just-in-time, and cost-effective deliveries.
The receipt of the EPA Air Permit underscores the project’s dedication to environmental sustainability, ensuring compliance with rigorous regulatory standards while showcasing a responsible approach to industrial development.
