Applebee’s and IHOP Set to Enter New Markets
Dine Brands International, an extension of Dine Brands Global, Inc. and the force behind Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill + Bar®, IHOP®, and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop®, has announced a significant expansion plan for 2025. This strategic growth includes introducing its dual-branded Applebee’s and IHOP concept in Costa Rica and launching non-traditional restaurant formats in Mexico. The company aims to increase its global presence by opening new locations across key international markets.
Costa Rica Welcomes Its First Dual-Branded Applebee’s and IHOP
In partnership with franchisee BLT UK Holdings Limited, Dine Brands International will debut in Costa Rica, with its first dual-branded Applebee’s and IHOP restaurant set to open in San José in summer 2025. This move follows the successful launch of the first dual-branded restaurant in Honduras in 2024. BLT UK Holdings Limited is continuing to strengthen its relationship with the brand, with plans for additional expansions in the region.
The dual-branded concept, which houses both Applebee’s and IHOP under one roof, has proven successful in multiple international markets. By combining two beloved casual dining brands, the format provides guests with a diverse menu and a dynamic dining experience.
Expanding Non-Traditional Formats in Mexico
Dine Brands International is also introducing non-traditional restaurant formats in Mexico through partnerships with Grupo Shogua and ATH Group. The expansion includes an IHOP location at Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in Mexico City and a dual-branded restaurant at the Parador Pedro Escobedo travel center. These high-traffic locations provide strategic opportunities to reach new customers and increase brand visibility.
Currently, there are 18 dual-branded Applebee’s and IHOP locations in seven markets, including Mexico, Canada, the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Honduras, and Peru. By the end of 2025, the company plans to open 13 additional dual-branded locations and complete 10 restaurant conversions, bringing the total to 41 globally.
Franchise Opportunities in Key Global Markets
Dine Brands International is actively seeking Master Developers in select regions of Mexico and Canada, as well as Master Franchisees/Master Developers in high-potential markets across Europe and Asia, including South Korea, Japan, and Spain. With the demand for international casual dining on the rise, the company is looking to partner with experienced franchise operators who share its vision for growth.
Scott Gladstone, President of International and Corporate Development at Dine Brands Global, expressed confidence in the expansion strategy, stating, “Our growth plans focus on adapting to local cultures while introducing new restaurant formats that enhance the guest experience. By working closely with our franchise partners, we aim to create compelling business opportunities and establish Applebee’s and IHOP as leading global brands.”
A Strong Track Record of International Growth
Dine Brands International has consistently expanded its global footprint, with 2024 marking a successful year in restaurant development. The company and its franchisees opened 36 new locations and entered new markets, such as Honduras. This momentum continues into 2025, with a focus on both traditional and non-traditional restaurant formats.
By leveraging a combination of market expansion, strategic partnerships, and innovative dining concepts, Dine Brands International is well-positioned to strengthen its international presence and drive long-term success in the casual dining industry.
