Italy’s rich history and vibrant culture make it a prime destination for summer travel. To make the most of your visit and avoid peak crowds and high prices, Pompeii Tours & Tickets has analyzed TripAdvisor, Google search, and weather data to recommend the best Italian landmarks to visit each month of the summer.
May:
For May, Castello Aragonese in Taranto is the top landmark to explore. This historic fortress, perched by the sea in the Apulian region, offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean and is a cornerstone of the city’s history. With only 6% of annual visitors arriving in May, it’s an excellent time to enjoy this site with fewer crowds.
Palazzo Conte Federico in Palermo and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome also feature prominently in May, offering a blend of historical significance and architectural beauty.
June:
June continues to highlight Castello Aragonese as a top destination. It is joined by Palazzo Conte Federico and the Colosseum in Rome. The Colosseum, renowned for its ancient grandeur and historical significance, is ideal to visit in June due to its pleasant average temperature of around 24°C, close to the ideal 25°C.
July:
Galleria Borbonica and the Catacombe di San Gaudioso in Naples are the must-see landmarks for July. Both locations, known for their underground appeal, are highly rated and experience fewer visitors—7.79% and 7.71% of total visits, respectively. The Galleria Borbonica, originally a military passage, and the Catacombe di San Gaudioso, an ancient Christian burial site, offer a unique escape from the summer heat.
August:
In August, Rome emerges as the top city to visit, with the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Trevi Fountain leading the list. Despite the month being one of the warmest, these landmarks see fewer visitors compared to July. The Colosseum alone had nearly 1,000 fewer visitors in August compared to July, making it a more accessible choice. With only six rainy days on average, it’s a perfect time to experience these iconic sites.
September:
September highlights Castello Aragonese once again, along with the Colosseum and Galleria Borbonica. This month offers milder temperatures, with cities being 2 to 4 degrees cooler than the ideal 25°C, making sightseeing comfortable while still enjoying ample sunshine.
