From Military Service to Life on Two Wheels
For many, life takes unexpected turns, and Paul James (PJ) is no exception. A former Royal Air Force serviceman, he spent years leading an active lifestyle, always seeking adventure. However, in 2022, his health began to decline, and by January 2023, he received a diagnosis that would change his life—Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Now 55 years old, PJ lives in West Sussex with his wife Sarah and their two beloved miniature dachshunds. While MS has introduced new challenges, it has not diminished his passion for movement. Instead, he has found strength, purpose, and freedom through cycling.
Facing MS Head-On: A Life-Altering Diagnosis
Before his diagnosis, PJ had little knowledge of Multiple Sclerosis. Like many, he associated it with mobility issues but was unaware of the emotional and physical toll it could take. The uncertainty that followed was overwhelming, but support groups and MS charities provided invaluable guidance.
Talking to others on the same journey gave me hope. I quickly learned that sharing experiences makes all the difference. PJ embraced this mindset, focusing not on the limitations but on the ways he could adapt and continue doing what he loves.
Living with MS: Managing the Unpredictable
MS is a complex and unpredictable condition, affecting people differently. For PJ, fatigue is his biggest challenge. Some days, he feels almost normal; on others, even basic tasks can be exhausting. To manage his condition, he takes daily medication to slow the progression and has had to adjust his daily routine to accommodate fluctuating energy levels.
Rather than letting MS dictate his life, PJ has made thoughtful changes—prioritising rest, modifying his work schedule, and, most importantly, continuing to stay active.
Cycling: A Lifeline for Strength and Wellbeing
For PJ, cycling is not just a passion it’s a crucial part of his MS management. His neurologist encouraged him to keep riding, highlighting the benefits for muscle strength, coordination, mental clarity, and emotional well-being.
Unlike some MS patients who require adapted equipment, PJ continues to ride a standard road bike, commuting daily and enjoying weekend rides across the South Downs and Surrey Hills. The open road has become his sanctuary, offering a sense of freedom and control despite his diagnosis. “Riding keeps me strong physically and mentally. It’s where I feel most like myself.”
Taking on a Challenge: Bike the UK for MS
Determined to turn his diagnosis into a mission, PJ joined Bike the UK for MS, taking on the Lon Las Cymru challenge in 2024. The demanding ride took him across breathtaking landscapes while raising funds for MS research and support groups.
His motivation?
- To prove to himself that MS does not define him.
- To support the MS community by funding research and resources.
PJ is already preparing for the 2025 ride, eager to continue making an impact. “Every pedal stroke is a reminder that MS doesn’t control me, I control how I respond to it.”
The Strength of Community: Finding Support on the Road
One of the most rewarding aspects of PJ’s journey has been connecting with fellow cyclists and MS support groups along the way. “Meeting others affected by MS each with their own story of resilience has been incredible. Their positivity is infectious.”
Whether through fellow riders or MS groups, the sense of camaraderie reminds him that he is not alone. These connections have reinforced his belief in the power of shared experiences.
Overcoming Challenges: The Road to Resilience
Long-distance cycling is tough for anyone, but for PJ, the challenge is personal. MS presents obstacles, but the mental and physical battle only fuels his determination. “Some climbs are brutal, but reaching the top makes every struggle worth it. Cycling teaches you patience, perseverance, and gratitude.”
His journey proves that living with MS does not mean giving up on dreams it means finding new ways to pursue them.
A Call to Action: Join the Ride and Make a Difference
PJ encourages others to take on an MS cycling challenge, no matter their fitness level. “It’s not just about cycling it’s about being part of something bigger. You’ll ride through stunning landscapes, meet incredible people, and support a cause that changes lives. If I can do it, so can you!”
An Unstoppable Spirit on Two Wheels
PJ’s story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of community. Through Bike the UK for MS, he continues to push his limits, raise awareness, and inspire others. His journey proves that, while MS may change a person’s life, it doesn’t have to define it.
