Hong Kong’s Vibrant Culture Takes Centre Stage at Art Basel Paris
The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is thrilled to announce its innovative debut at Art Basel Paris, showcasing an authentic “Cha Chaan Teng” — a beloved Hong Kong-style café. This special event, taking place from 16 to 20 October 2024 at the Grand Palais, marks the beginning of a three-year global partnership with Art Basel, one of the world’s leading contemporary art fairs. Renowned Hong Kong-based artist Trevor Yeung has been invited to elevate the Cha Chaan Teng experience with his captivating light art installations, offering a unique blend of culture, creativity, and culinary excellence.
Reviving the Spirit of Hong Kong through Art and Cuisine
Cha Chaan Tengs, which originated in the 1950s, are famous for their bustling atmosphere and fusion of Eastern and Western comfort food. The immersive Cha Chaan Teng experience at Art Basel Paris will transport visitors to Hong Kong through an eclectic array of flavours and a dynamic social setting. The café will offer a selection of traditional Hong Kong treats such as pineapple buns, egg tarts, milk tea, and mango pudding, alongside its signature neon signage and nostalgic design elements, including vibrant patterned floor tiles and cosy booths.
Yeung’s contribution to the Cha Chaan Teng is his newest work, Chaotic Suns (Transiting 01), a continuation of his celebrated Chaotic Suns series. The illuminated chandelier-like installation was previously featured at the 24th Biennale of Sydney in 2024. Yeung uses light gradients to create a dynamic artwork that reflects Hong Kong’s diverse energy and urban chaos. The installation’s design explores the delicate balance between chaos and order, symbolising the fusion of traditional and contemporary elements.
“I’m excited to bring the Chaotic Suns series into a fresh setting,” said Yeung. This is my debut showcasing the work within the dynamic context of both an art fair and a café environment. It’s a fascinating challenge, and I hope it invites deeper reflections on Hong Kong’s cultural vibrancy and complexity.”
A Strategic Partnership to Promote Hong Kong’s Art and Culture
This collaboration between HKTB and Art Basel aims to position Hong Kong as a global hub for culture and art. The Cha Chaan Teng is not only an art installation but a sensory journey into the heart of Hong Kong’s unique heritage. Visitors will have the chance to experience the fusion of East and West, not only through the food and art but through the welcoming spirit of Hong Kong’s cafe culture.
HKTB Executive Director Mr. Dane Cheng shared, “We are thrilled to launch our three-year partnership with Art Basel through this remarkable event at Art Basel Paris. This collaboration highlights Hong Kong’s pivotal role as a hub for global cultural exchange, where the fusion of Eastern and Western influences comes to life. We hope to inspire global visitors to explore Hong Kong’s thriving creative community, rich history, and innovative art scene.”
