LG Electronics Showcases Cutting-Edge Transparent OLED Technology
LG Electronics (LG) is making a significant impact at Frieze Seoul 2024, held from September 4 to 7 at COEX Seoul, as its official headline partner for the second consecutive year. This year’s exhibition, titled “Suh Se Ok X LG OLED: Reimagined by Suh Do Ho, Shaped by Suh Eul Ho,” offers a groundbreaking blend of artistic vision and technological innovation. It features the renowned works of Suh Se Ok, a trailblazer in Korean ink abstraction, alongside modern reinterpretations by his sons, artist Suh Do Ho and architect Suh Eul Ho. This marks the debut of LG’s transparent OLED TVs in Korea.
Reimagining Artistic Legacy
The exhibition takes full advantage of LG’s transparent OLED TVs, which offer near-infinite contrast ratios and deep blacks to showcase the intricate details of ink paintings. This advanced technology provides a fresh perspective on Suh Se Ok’s artwork, capturing the subtle gradations of black and white that are central to ink abstraction.
Architect Suh Eul Ho has meticulously designed the exhibition space to enhance the artistic experience. By layering the artwork and using transparent screens, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the exhibition. The experience begins with a translucent installation at the entrance, leading to a captivating display of media art through eight transparent LG OLED TVs and LG OLED evo TVs.
Animating Legacy
Preserving and Celebrating Artistic Heritage
The exhibition also features a large media wall composed of 24 OLED signage displays, showcasing behind-the-scenes footage of Suh Se Ok’s artistic process. In addition, seven of Suh Se Ok’s seminal works, such as the renowned “Joyful Rain” (1976) and “Wayfarer” (1978), are prominently featured, preserving and celebrating his enduring artistic legacy.
Expanding the Horizon of Digital Art
In conjunction with the Frieze Seoul 2024 exhibition, LG is also advancing its LG OLED ART initiative, which explores the boundless creative potential of OLED technology. This effort includes recent events such as the debut of LG’s OLED TVs and projectors at the “Connecting Bodies: Asian Women Artists” exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea. LG will also host the “K-ART Night X LG OLED” event on September 4 to celebrate the Frieze Seoul opening.
Kate Oh, Vice President of the Brand Communication Division at LG Home Entertainment Company, commented, “We are honoured to present the artistic legacy of Suh Se Ok, alongside the innovative reinterpretations by his sons, to global audiences at Frieze Seoul. This collaboration reinforces LG OLED’s reputation as the ultimate digital canvas, bridging the gap between art and technology in unique and inspiring ways.”
