A Pioneering Partnership
Mammut Loopinsulation results from a collaborative effort with Teufelberger, a leading Austrian rope manufacturer. This unique insulation material is produced from production scraps that would typically be discarded during the industrial rope manufacturing process. By employing a chemical-free mechanical recycling approach, Mammut transforms these scraps into high-quality insulation.
Helena Theba, Material Management Lead at Mammut, explains, “With Mammut Loopinsulation, we are adopting a circular and resource-conscious approach to material reuse. This marks an essential milestone for the future of sustainable outdoor clothing, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve both high performance and eco-friendliness.”
From Insight to Innovation
The idea for Loopinsulation was born following a comprehensive analysis of Mammut’s carbon emissions in 2018, revealing that 13% of the company’s total CO2 output stemmed from rope manufacturing. Acknowledging the environmental impact, Mammut initiated thorough research to explore the potential for reusing rope production waste. The result was Loopinsulation, a technology distinguished by its efficiency and positive environmental impact, providing a compelling solution for the outdoor apparel industry.
Achievements and Challenges Overcome
As Mammut prepares for the 2024 fall and winter season, the company proudly announces that it has successfully recycled 12 tons of rope scraps into valuable insulation material. However, the path to this achievement was not without its challenges. Variations in rope diameter, quality, and color posed significant hurdles during the recycling process. Mammut overcame these challenges through innovative solutions and a well-organized logistics system. “The complexities of recycling processes should never be underestimated,” states Theba. Building a circular economy requires significant effort and specialized knowledge.
Spotlight on the Sender IN Hooded Jacket
A prominent example of Loopinsulation in practical application is the Sender IN Hooded Jacket. This insulated jacket combines Loopinsulation with a recycled outer shell that is wind- and water-repellent, illustrating Mammut’s commitment to creating a fully circular and eco-friendly production process. The Sender IN Hooded Jacket not only provides superior warmth and protection in harsh conditions but also contributes to reducing environmental impact. The jacket’s stylish design ensures that it meets the aesthetic demands of outdoor enthusiasts while maintaining exceptional functionality.
The Future of Sustainable Outdoor Apparel
As consumers increasingly seek sustainable options in outdoor clothing, Mammut remains dedicated to pioneering innovations that align with this demand. The introduction of Loopinsulation represents a crucial step toward more sustainable practices within the outdoor apparel sector. By turning waste into high-quality insulation, Mammut is redefining how the industry approaches resource conservation, encouraging other brands to consider similar practices.
Mammut’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond product innovation; it encompasses the entire lifecycle of its products, from sourcing raw materials to end-of-life considerations. As the outdoor industry continues to evolve, Mammut aims to lead by example, demonstrating that environmental responsibility can coexist with performance excellence.
