NMI enhances ticketing convenience across 232 railway stations, bringing secure, fast, and efficient payment technology to UK train operators and passengers.
Transforming the Passenger Payment Experience
NMI®, a global leader in embedded payment technology, has introduced a next-generation payment system for the UK railway network, enhancing efficiency, security, and accessibility across 232 train stations. This initiative, developed in collaboration with a leading ticketing software provider and payment hardware manufacturer, enables seamless transactions for 16 train operating companies, including Great Western Railway, Northern Rail, East Midlands, and Arriva Cross Country.
The introduction of 4,000 state-of-the-art payment terminals at ticket counters, self-service kiosks, and on-platform locations allows passengers to purchase tickets with ease. Additionally, mobile ticketing solutions empower railway staff to process payments directly from revenue protection officers, offering commuters greater flexibility and reduced wait times.
Passengers can now pay using major debit and credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, removing the inconvenience of cash-only transactions. This contactless-first approach not only increases convenience but also supports the UK’s transition to a digitally inclusive transport system.
Advanced Payment Technology for Seamless Travel
NMI’s cutting-edge payment infrastructure ensures that every ticket purchase is fast, frictionless, and secure. Whether at a station counter, on a self-service machine, or via a train conductor, passengers experience a unified, reliable payment process across the network.
By deploying a single, standardised payment device model across all stations, train operators benefit from greater consistency, reducing maintenance complexities and improving operational efficiency. The transition from outdated systems to a fully integrated modern solution enhances cost-effectiveness while significantly improving passenger satisfaction.
Additionally, the ability to process penalty fare payments on-site streamlines revenue collection for train operators, preventing administrative delays and reducing reliance on manual processes.
Uncompromising Security and Regulatory Compliance
Security is a top priority in public transport payment systems. NMI’s advanced encryption technology ensures that passenger data is protected from fraud and cyber threats. By implementing Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE), NMI safeguards sensitive information from the moment it is entered into the PIN pad until it is processed, significantly reducing the risk of data breaches.
This secure framework also ensures full compliance with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), making it easier for train operators to meet regulatory requirements while enhancing trust among passengers.
A Major Step Forward for UK Rail Infrastructure
The modernisation project began in mid-2023, with Liverpool Lime Street serving as the first station to integrate the new payment system. Over the following months, the system was systematically rolled out across multiple stations, culminating in the final deployment at Shenfield, Essex.
Peter Alcock, Head of Unattended Payment Solutions at NMI, stated: “This initiative represents a significant leap forward in railway ticketing, delivering a seamless and secure payment experience for passengers while simplifying operations for train operators. By integrating our technology across multiple touchpoints, we ensure that ticket purchases remain fast, reliable, and stress-free. This marks a major milestone in making UK rail travel more accessible and efficient for everyone.”
With over 4,000 advanced payment devices now in use, NMI is reshaping the railway payment landscape, providing a secure, modern, and future-proof solution that meets the evolving needs of both passengers and train operators.
