In celebration of World Water Day 2025, the Saudi Water Authority (SWA) is proud to launch the documentary Magic of Water, offering a powerful glimpse into Saudi Arabia’s remarkable transformation from one of the most water-scarce nations to the world’s largest producer of desalinated water. This milestone is not only a testament to the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to water security but also a call to action for the global community to tackle water challenges through innovation and collaboration.
A National Transformation in Water Security
Once defined by its vast, arid deserts, Saudi Arabia has defied expectations to become a global leader in water sustainability. Through visionary leadership and cutting-edge technologies, the Kingdom has secured its water supply while pioneering global best practices in desalination, water management, and environmental protection. The Kingdom’s success in water security offers a model for nations worldwide facing similar challenges.
Since its establishment, the SWA has overseen the production of over 15 million cubic meters of desalinated water daily. With a blend of public and private sector partnerships, the Kingdom has achieved unparalleled operational efficiency, cutting energy consumption, investment costs, and operational expenses. Saudi Arabia’s state-of-the-art transmission network spans more than 14,000 kilometers, enabling reliable water delivery across diverse terrains. This network is complemented by an extensive distribution system that covers over 135,000 kilometers, ensuring that urban and rural communities alike have access to clean, safe water.
Innovating for the Future
At the core of Saudi Arabia’s water revolution is its investment in next-generation technologies. AI-powered desalination plants have significantly increased operational efficiency, while eco-friendly water transport systems reduce the environmental footprint of water delivery. A pioneering anti-corrosion solution, inspired by palm trees, is extending the lifespan of critical infrastructure, further enhancing the Kingdom’s sustainable water management systems.
These innovations are not just about enhancing Saudi Arabia’s own water infrastructure; they are setting new benchmarks for the world. By embracing cutting-edge solutions, Saudi Arabia is positioned as a global hub for water technology, sustainability, and climate resilience.
Driving Global Collaboration and Climate Action
SWA’s impact extends far beyond the Kingdom’s borders. Aligned with the Saudi Green Initiative, the Kingdom has reduced carbon emissions by 37 million tons annually since 2019, contributing to the global fight against climate change. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia’s water technology projects are spurring local economic development, generating high-skilled jobs, and increasing the country’s involvement in the global water sector. With a 65% local content ratio in desalination projects, the Kingdom is bolstering its economy while advancing sustainability.
“Securing water is securing the future,” said H.E. Eng. Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al-Abdulkarim, President of the Saudi Water Authority. “Our efforts in desalination and sustainability are setting a global example for nations to follow. We are not just solving our own water challenges; we are paving the way for international collaboration and innovation.”
Inspiring Global Action
Saudi Arabia’s leadership in water security is reflected in its efforts to foster international cooperation. As the host of the 2027 World Water Forum, the Kingdom is positioning itself as a leader in global water solutions. Furthermore, the creation of the Global Water Organization and the launch of the $10 million Global Prize for Innovation in Water are initiatives aimed at driving international collaboration and encouraging technological breakthroughs.
To further share its journey and inspire the world, SWA presents Magic of Water, a documentary that tells the human stories behind the Kingdom’s transformation. The film highlights the scientists, visionaries, and communities who have played a key role in this success story, offering valuable insights into how human ingenuity and collaboration can solve the most pressing global challenges.
A Global Call to Action
On World Water Day 2025, Saudi Arabia calls on the international community to embrace sustainable water management solutions and work together to tackle the world’s most critical water challenges. By sharing its own journey, Saudi Arabia hopes to inspire global action, proving that through leadership, innovation, and cooperation, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
