A recent study has uncovered that workplace napping is costing the UK economy an astonishing £104 million every single day. The survey, conducted by Reign Storm, found that approximately six million Brits admit to taking naps while on the job, with the highest likelihood occurring between 3 – 4 pm. Interestingly, 18% of adults believe that this time of day is their least productive, with many workers feeling drained and lacking energy.
The Cost of Workplace Napping
With the average hourly wage in the UK set at £17.40, if each employee naps for one hour during their workday, this equates to a substantial £104 million being lost daily. Over the course of a year, this figure jumps to an eye-watering £24 billion — enough to purchase about 17 Buckingham Palaces. Despite this significant productivity loss, more than three million UK adults have left their jobs due to the impact of fatigue, while 16% have argued with colleagues because they were overtired. In an alarming trend, almost 20% of 18–24-year-olds have admitted to calling in sick due to “tangry,” a term describing the anger caused by tiredness.
Sleep Habits and Their Impact on Social Life
Reign Storm’s research also found that napping habits extend beyond the workplace. A surprising three million Brits have confessed to sneaking off for a nap at a party. Even more concerning, up to six million UK adults are expected to miss this year’s New Year’s Eve countdown, the most anticipated party night of the year, simply because they lack the energy to stay awake. The findings also highlight a shift in attitudes towards sleep, with many Brits now prioritising rest and listening to their bodies more. For instance, UK women are nearly twice as likely as men to cancel plans if they feel overly tired.

The Long-Term Effects of Fatigue on Productivity
This new research highlights the broader issue of workplace fatigue and its significant impact on the UK’s economy. With the average UK worker losing an hour a day to sleepiness, it is no surprise that productivity levels are suffering. The effects of these sleep habits extend well beyond the workplace, influencing social activities and even personal relationships. With the ongoing pressures of modern life, finding sustainable solutions to improve energy levels is crucial for both businesses and individuals.
Based on the assumption that each worker takes a 1-hour nap each day for 47 working weeks per year, at an average hourly wage of £17.40.
