Supporting in a Work Environment
Muslims work in various industries ranging from accounting firms, secondary schools, doctor’s surgeries, dentistry clinics, restaurants, call centers and other fields. It may be that you’ve got a fellow Muslim in your team at your workplace and wish to support them during the sacred month but don’t know where to begin. One of the best ways in which you can be an ally in their journey is to simply familiarize yourself with the key events that place in Ramadan. You can begin by understanding the meaning of Ramadan. The month requires Muslims to go through a spiritual detox of worldly desires and to devote their time to remembering Allah SWT.
Some of the ways in which Muslims will improve their spiritual wellbeing is to engage in activities that are not soul-destroying such as avoiding profanity, practicing patience and forgiveness, abstaining from food and drinks at the prescribed times, giving to charity, refraining form gossiping and much more.
As a colleague, you can encourage your Muslim peers in engaging in acts of goodness by simply encouraging positive conversations that help build a persons character, go for an Iftar dinner together to break their fast, gift them dates for their fast, allow them time to engage in prayers during their working hours and even support their schedule with a balance of energy-filled tasks so they may not feel overwhelmed by the end of their shifts.
Supporting a Friend
As we engage in schools, colleges, universities, workplaces and other networking opportunities, we tend to befriend people of all sorts of races, religions and backgrounds. You can befriend Muslims from various institutes in life. Some friendships over time become lifelong relationships and in them you may wish to make the extra effort in understanding an individual’s beliefs. To support your Muslim friends, consider sending them a warm Ramadan Mubarak greeting message. They will appreciate your efforts and cherish your generosity for years to come. You can also learn the recipe of their favorite dish and impress them with a delicious Halal meal!
Supporting a Neighbor
It is often a treat being neighbors to Muslims, especially during the sacred month of Ramadan. Muslim homes usually result in delicious meals that are cooked in preparation for Iftar which is the correct term for the official breaking of the fast during each day, for 30 days straight in Ramadan. Muslims are educated by the Quran to look after their neighbors as they do their own family and to show kindness towards them. This often entails them knocking on doors to share their family recipes so that their neighbors may join in on the breakage of the fast for the day.
You can most certainly support your Muslim neighbor by gifting them a box of dates to help open their fast with and to send them a Ramadan Mubarak greeting card. You can also make a halal cooked meal for them and it would please them immensely!
