The Ultimate Sleep Playlist
In a recent study, online mattress brand eveSleep has unveiled the top songs to help Brits achieve a restful night’s sleep. With 64% of the UK population reporting regular difficulties falling asleep, and nearly three-quarters actively seeking ways to relax before bed, music has emerged as a leading remedy. eveSleep’s analysis of thousands of tracks has resulted in a carefully curated playlist of the top ten songs and soundtracks designed to promote relaxation and enhance sleep quality.
Top Tracks for a Restful Night
The study reveals that Noah Cyrus’s gentle acoustic track, ‘July,’ leads the list as the most soothing song for sleep, boasting over 985 million listens. Following closely is Taylor Swift’s ‘Exile,’ with over 760 million listens, known for its calming lyrics and melodic rhythm. Alternative indie band Cigarettes After Sex also made the list, showcasing the genre’s appeal for those seeking restful tunes.
The classic ‘Brahms Lullaby,’ a staple in sleep music, along with natural sounds of rainfall, also featured prominently in the study, reflecting their longstanding popularity as soothing sleep aids.
Methodology and Findings
The research involved analysing nearly 100 sleep-specific playlists and thousands of individual tracks to compile a 42-minute playlist that adheres to sleep science criteria. Factors such as beats per minute (bpm), genre, and lyrics were considered to ensure the selected songs meet the needs of those struggling to unwind before sleep.
The results highlight a shift in sleep routines, with 36% of Brits favouring music over traditional methods like a hot bath (28%) or camomile tea (11%). This preference highlights how music can lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone that often disrupts sleep.
Why Music Enhances Sleep
Listening to music before bed has been shown to decrease cortisol levels, facilitating faster sleep onset and improving overall sleep quality. Songs with 60-80 bpm are particularly effective, as their soothing rhythms align with the body’s natural relaxation responses.
Classical music, including the timeless ‘Brahms Lullaby,’ contributes to sleep quality by mimicking a sleepy state with slower heart rate, breathing, and lower blood pressure. Additionally, natural sounds, such as rainfall and jungle noises, are popular for their ability to lower adrenaline levels and signal safety to the brain, aiding in a gradual drift to sleep.
