A new study has highlighted the leading European countries for electric vehicle (EV) usage, with Norway emerging as the clear leader. The research, conducted by the electronic registration portal Vignettecroatia.com, analysed 2022 data from Eurostat to identify which nations are embracing electric vehicles the most.
Norway Leads the Charge
To begin with, Norway tops the list with a remarkable 20.12% of all registered vehicles being electric. The country has 3,018,728 vehicles, of which 607,516 are electric-powered. This high adoption rate reflects Norway’s significant investment in sustainable transportation.
Denmark and Sweden Follow
Furthermore, Denmark ranks second, with 4.02% of its vehicles being electric. The country has a total of 2,801,076 registered vehicles, with 112,674 of these being electric. Sweden comes in third place, where 3.97% of its 4,979,761 vehicles are electric, amounting to 197,709 EVs.
Netherlands and Luxembourg in the Top Five
In addition, the Netherlands secures fourth place, with 3.7% of its vehicles being electric. Out of 8,917,107 registered vehicles, 330,113 are electric. Luxembourg, despite being one of Europe’s smallest countries, takes fifth place with 3.13% of its 444,818 registered vehicles being electric, totalling 13,909 EVs.
UK’s Position in the Rankings
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom ranks tenth, with 1.93% of its 32,169,932 registered vehicles being electric, equating to 620,632 EVs. This places the UK behind countries like Germany and Austria, which also have relatively low percentages of electric vehicles compared to Norway.

Luka Stojčević, a spokesperson for Vignettecroatia.com, commented on the findings:
Even though electric cars are increasingly widespread and affordable, they still pose a significant financial challenge for many Europeans. Even in some of the highest-income countries, electric vehicles are still relatively rare compared to other fuel types. However, as technology advances and production costs decrease, we expect this list to change as more countries adopt electric vehicles.”
Future of Electric Vehicle Adoption
As technology continues to improve and the costs associated with electric vehicles decrease, more European countries are likely to increase their EV adoption rates. The current leaders, such as Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, set a high benchmark, but other nations are expected to catch up as they invest more in sustainable transportation https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/road_eqs_carpda/default/table?lang=en
