Innovating for Sustainability in Packaging
The demand for sustainable packaging has never been stronger. As businesses around the world strive to reduce their environmental impact, UPM Specialty Papers is at the forefront of driving innovation in recyclable, fibre-based packaging. Our co-creation projects are leading the way in developing cutting-edge packaging solutions that support the sustainability objectives of brands and packaging converters alike. At PACK EXPO, we will showcase the following co-created solutions that push the boundaries of what is possible in recyclable packaging:
Collaborations Driving Innovation
- UPM Specialty Papers x Michelman
This collaboration has resulted in three co-created solutions, including an advanced high-barrier concept that delivers exceptional oxygen and moisture protection. Using water-based coatings, this breakthrough packaging is ideal for demanding end-uses such as coffee or chocolate packaging. This high-barrier solution offers a significant step forward in sustainable packaging that does not compromise on quality or performance. - UPM Specialty Papers x Henkel x Koenig & Bauer
A solution that excels in sealability properties and offers robust moisture and grease barriers, making it the perfect option for packaging confectionery products. Additionally, this solution is designed for digital printing, making it a versatile and innovative choice for brands looking to enhance the consumer experience through customisable packaging. - UPM Specialty Papers x Fazer
We are proud to introduce a heat-sealable, recyclable packaging solution created specifically for Fazer Oat Rice Pies, a popular product in the chilled food aisle. This packaging offers superior resistance to moisture and grease, eliminating the need for an additional plastic layer and reducing the overall environmental impact. - UPM Specialty Papers x Unipaco
This collaboration focuses on developing a heat-sealable, moisture-resistant salad pot wrapper made from paper and a thin PE layer. This innovative packaging replaces traditional plastic and meets strict German 95/5 mono-material requirements, with 95% of the packaging mass being made from single-component materials, helping to reduce plastic waste. - UPM Specialty Papers x BOBST x Michelman
Our partnership with BOBST and Michelman has resulted in an innovative, high-barrier, and recyclable paper-based packaging designed for long shelf-life products such as coffee, spices, and other difficult-to-package items. This solution is an example of the potential of fibre-based packaging to address a wide range of consumer needs. - UPM Specialty Papers x Eastman
We will also highlight a paper-based packaging solution that uses a thin, compostable bio-based extrusion coating to provide heat-sealability and excellent adhesion at low coat weights. This solution is ideal for food packaging, especially for products like confectionery, which require both an oxygen and grease barrier.
